First visit to Hoan Hy: what to order

An 80-dish menu is a joy for regulars and a puzzle for newcomers. Here is the ordering path we usually suggest for a first meal.
The question we hear most from first-time guests: there are so many dishes, where do I start? The Hoan Hy menu holds over 80 dishes in 13 groups, from rolls, salads and soups to hot pots and pizza. The easiest way to order is not to read everything, but to order like a Vietnamese family meal: something light to open, something fresh, one hearty main, and a cool drink to close.
Open light: rolls and appetizers
Rolls are priced per piece, so try a few kinds: bò bía and fresh spring rolls at 15,000 VND, shredded-tofu rolls at 16,000. The cuốn diếp at 17,000 VND is one of the best-loved dishes in the house: fresh mustard-leaf rolls, wrapped tight, gone before you notice. For a bigger table, one Hoan Hy appetizer platter at 86,000 VND sits nicely in the middle for everyone.

The main: fried rice or a noodle bowl
For two people, the simplest formula is one fried rice, one braise and one soup. Hoan Hy fried rice at 88,000 VND is the house favorite, alongside the crispy xù xì rice and the clay-bowl rice at the same price. For the braise, black-pepper king oyster mushrooms or clay-pot eggplant, both 79,000 VND, are made for rice. Noodle lovers get a whole three-regions section at a flat 82,000 VND: mì Quảng is the group's marked favorite, followed by bún Huế, bún riêu and phở.
With a group, go straight to hot pot
From four people up, skip everything and order a hot pot. The Hoan Hy hot pot at 240,000 VND is the most-called-for: a broth sweetened by vegetables, served with a tray of fresh mushrooms and greens. For bolder flavor there is the sour-spicy pot at the same price, or the fermented-tofu pot at 220,000. One pot with noodles feeds the table; add a plate of rolls and it becomes a small feast.

Close with the house drink
The drinks list runs to 24 choices, but the most-ordered glass is the five-bean drink at 15,000 VND, the house signature, cool and nutty. Herbal sâm tea costs the same, and the Hoan Hy juice at 49,000 VND is the fancy option. One last tip: on lunar 1st and 15th the restaurant fills up from noon, so call ahead to book. Both branches' numbers are on the Visit page.
